Seaweed absolute is one of the most genuinely unusual and evocative materials in natural perfumery — a material that sits entirely outside the conventional floral, resinous, and woody categories and occupies a world of its own: the rocky Atlantic shoreline at low tide, brine-washed stone, sun-warmed kelp, the cold green smell of the deep ocean. Extracted by solvent extraction from Fucus vesiculosus — bladderwrack, the characteristic brown seaweed of the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, found from the shores of northern France and the British Isles to the coasts of North America — this absolute captures the full aromatic character of fresh Atlantic seaweed: oceanic, leathery, herbaceous, and possessed of a depth and complexity that no synthetic marine material approaches. The same species was the original source of iodine when it was discovered in 1811, and that iodine-rich mineral character is palpable in the absolute.

Use at modest concentrations — its character is assertive and reads clearly even at low doses. It blends particularly well with oud, woods, and spice materials, where its oceanic freshness provides an unusual and compelling counterpoint to warmer, darker base notes.

Blending Suggestions

Pairs beautifully with oud, cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver, labdanum, cistus, bergamot, violet leaf, galbanum, ambergris accords, oakmoss, leather accords, and marine materials. The combination with labdanum and cistus for a coastal chypre of unusual character is particularly recommended. Equally rewarding alongside oud and cedarwood where the oceanic character provides a striking and original counterpoint.
