Rosemary Essential Oil (Salvia rosmarinus / Rosmarinus officinalis)

  • Note: Rosmarinus officinalis has been reclassified as Salvia rosmarinus in recent botanical nomenclature. Both names refer to the same plant and oil.

Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, now widely cultivated across Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, France, and Italy. Spain, Morocco, and Tunisia are among the largest producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the fresh flowering tops, leaves, and twigs of the rosemary plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Note that rosemary has been reclassified from Rosmarinus officinalis to Salvia rosmarinus, though the former name remains widely used in the essential oil trade. There are several chemotypes available - ct. cineole (the most common), ct. camphor, and ct. verbenone - each with a distinctly different chemical profile and scent character. Rosemary has been one of the most revered aromatic plants since ancient Greek and Roman times, with a deeply established place in perfumery and aromatic traditions worldwide.

Scent: Fresh, herbaceous, and strongly aromatic with a clean, camphoraceous, woody character. Bold and bracing - there's a bright, green, slightly minty quality balanced by a warm, resinous, balsamic depth. Subtly peppery with a faint, eucalyptus-like freshness. The cineole chemotype is the most fresh and penetrating, the camphor type is more piercing and sharp in character, and the verbenone type is softer, sweeter, and more herbaceous. Vibrant, complex, and immediately recognisable - a classic, timeless herbal scent.

Uses:

  • A staple of natural perfumery - adds a fresh, herbaceous, aromatic quality and green brightness to blends
  • A classic addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, clean, herbaceous atmosphere to any space
  • Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, fresh, herbal character
  • Used in natural household products for its strong, clean scent profile
  • Blends beautifully with lavender, cedarwood, frankincense, bergamot, lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus, basil, and geranium oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbal, aromatic, fresh, and masculine compositions
  • Different chemotypes offer versatility - cineole for freshness, camphor for sharpness, verbenone for a softer, sweeter profile
