Ruh Gulab — The Spirit of the Rose from Kannauj

"Ruh" means spirit or essence in Persian. "Gulab" means rose. Ruh Gulab — the spirit of the rose — is perhaps the most poetic name in all of natural perfumery, and the material it describes lives up to every syllable of that poetry. This is not rose absolute, solvent extracted in a modern facility. This is Indian rose otto — Rosa damascena steam distilled or hydro-distilled in the ancient perfumery city of Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, using methods that have been refined over more than a thousand years of continuous aromatic tradition. It is one of the oldest and most revered perfumery materials in existence.

Kannauj — known as the perfume capital of India — has produced rose oil of exceptional quality since the Mughal period, when the Emperor Jahangir's court perfumers first began distilling the Damask rose in the great copper degs (stills) that remain in use to this day. The process is extraordinarily labour-intensive: fresh rose petals are loaded into the deg at dawn, water is added, and the still is heated gently over many hours — the aromatic steam passing through a bamboo pipe into a receiving vessel containing pure sandalwood oil or water, which absorbs the volatile rose constituents. The result, after careful separation and ageing, is Ruh Gulab: a pale yellow, semi-solid material of extraordinary purity and beauty that contains the complete aromatic profile of the fresh rose flower in a concentration that no other extraction method achieves.

The pale yellow colour and the tendency to solidify at temperatures below approximately 17-18°C are the hallmarks of genuine rose otto — caused by the natural stearoptenes (rose waxes) present in authentic distilled rose oil, which are absent from solvent-extracted rose absolutes and from any synthetic approximation. If your Ruh Gulab solidifies in cool temperatures, that is proof of its authenticity, not a defect.

Scent Profile

The opening is a revelation — a rich, sweet, deeply floral rose character of extraordinary complexity, simultaneously honeyed and fresh, warm and slightly spicy, with facets of geranium, citrus, and a characteristic waxy-rosy quality that is unique to genuine steam-distilled rose oil. This is not the darker, more animalic character of rose absolute — it is cleaner, purer, and more luminously rosy, capturing the flower at its most transparent and most beautiful. The heart deepens into a warm, honeyed, slightly powdery rose character of great tenacity. The drydown is extraordinarily long — genuine rose otto persists on a smelling strip for many hours, revealing new facets as the volatile elements dissipate and the deeper waxy rose character gradually asserts itself.

Perfumery Applications

Ruh Gulab occupies a unique position in the natural perfumer's palette — a material that bridges the Indian attar tradition and the classical Western fine fragrance tradition, at home in both and enriching whichever it enters. In classical rose soliflores and rose-centred compositions it is the purest and most authentic expression of the rose note available. In orientals its warm, honeyed character adds a luminous floral heart of extraordinary beauty. In chypres it provides a clean, crystalline rose counterpoint to mossy base materials. In masculine compositions its slight spicy-rosy character adds a quietly feminine dimension that gives the composition humanising warmth.

Used in combination with our Turkish Rose Absolute and Moroccan Rose Damask Absolute, it creates a multi-dimensional rose accord spanning three distinct rose traditions — Indian distillation, Turkish solvent extraction, and Moroccan solvent extraction — of extraordinary depth and complexity.

Warming note: Ruh Gulab will semi-solidify below approximately 17-18°C due to its natural stearoptene content. Warm the bottle gently in warm water for a few minutes before use to restore full fluidity. This is a characteristic of genuine rose otto and confirms the authenticity of the material.

Blending Suggestions

Pairs beautifully with jasmine absolute, Turkish rose absolute, Moroccan rose absolute, violet leaf, orris, neroli, orange blossom, ylang ylang, geranium, bergamot, clary sage, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, patchouli, frankincense, labdanum, oud, tonka bean, and natural musks. The combination with sandalwood — the traditional Kannauj base for rose attar — is particularly classical and deeply beautiful.
