Nutmeg Essential Oil (Myristica fragrans)
Origin: Native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia, now also cultivated across Sri Lanka, India, Grenada, and other tropical regions. Indonesia and Grenada are the largest producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried seeds (kernels) of the fruit of the nutmeg tree, which belongs to the Myristicaceae family. Nutmeg and mace come from the same tree and the same fruit, but from different parts – nutmeg from the inner seed and mace from the outer aril – producing oils with related but distinctly different scent profiles. Nutmeg has been one of the most prized and sought-after spices in history, driving centuries of exploration and trade across ancient spice routes. It has a deeply established place in perfumery and aromatic traditions worldwide.
Scent: Warm, rich, and sweetly spicy with a deep, woody, slightly musky character. Bold and aromatic – there's a distinctive, sharp, peppery warmth balanced by a soft, sweet, balsamic depth. Subtly camphoraceous and earthy with a faint, honeyed, almost buttery undertone. Fuller-bodied, deeper, and more robust than mace, with a richer, warmer, more intense quality. Dense, complex, and long-lasting – a classic, commanding spice scent that is at once familiar and deeply layered.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, rich, spicy accent – adds bold, aromatic warmth and a deep, musky complexity to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, spicy, inviting atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, warm, classic spice character
- Blends beautifully with orange, cinnamon, clove, frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, lavender, bergamot, cardamom, and vanilla oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for spicy, oriental, gourmand, festive, and masculine compositions
- Pairs exceptionally well with citrus and other warm spice oils for rich, layered, winter and holiday blends
