Manuka Essential Oil (Leptospermum scoparium)
Origin: Native to New Zealand, found widely across both the North and South Islands, from coastal lowlands to mountainous regions. New Zealand is the primary producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and small branches of the manuka shrub, which belongs to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. Manuka is one of the most culturally significant plants in New Zealand, holding deep importance in Māori tradition where it has been valued for centuries. It is distinct from kanuka (Kunzea ericoides), which is a closely related but botanically different species often confused with manuka. The chemical profile and scent of manuka oil varies significantly depending on the region of New Zealand where it is harvested. Manuka has gained significant international recognition in recent decades and is increasingly valued in perfumery and artisan fragrance work.
Scent: Rich, warm, and deeply earthy with a complex, honeyed, herbaceous character. Bold and distinctive – there's a sharp, slightly bitter, tea-tree-like freshness balanced by a deep, sweet, warm, almost smoky depth. Subtly spicy and woody with a faint, damp, mossy, forest-floor undertone. Denser, darker, and more complex than kanuka or tea tree, with a rich, brooding, resinous quality. Full-bodied, grounding, and remarkably long-lasting – a unique, powerful, deeply earthy scent with a distinctive New Zealand character.
