Lovage Essential Oil (Levisticum officinale)
Origin: Native to southern Europe and western Asia, particularly the Mediterranean region. Now widely cultivated across Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, France, and parts of the United States. Hungary and Germany are among the most notable producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the roots, leaves, or seeds of the lovage plant, which belongs to the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family. The oil distilled from different plant parts has a different chemical profile and scent character – root oil is the most commonly available and most prized in perfumery. Lovage is the sole species in the genus Levisticum. The name "lovage" derives from the medieval English "love-ache," itself a corruption of the Latin ligusticum, meaning "from Liguria" in northwest Italy where the herb was once grown extensively. Lovage has been valued in European aromatic, culinary, and perfumery traditions since ancient Roman times and has a well-established place in artisan fragrance work.
Scent: Rich, warm, and deeply herbaceous with a complex, earthy, celery-like character. Bold and aromatic – there's a distinctive, sweet, spicy warmth balanced by a sharp, green, slightly bitter freshness. Faintly musky and woody with a subtle, anise-like, balsamic depth. Root oil is darker, denser, and more earthy, while leaf oil is lighter, greener, and more herbaceous. Dense, complex, and remarkably long-lasting – a powerful, distinctive herbal scent with a unique, savoury, almost umami-like quality. One of the most unusual and underappreciated herbaceous oils in perfumery.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a rich, earthy, herbaceous accent – adds a distinctive, savoury depth and unusual, celery-like warmth to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, herbaceous, grounding atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, bold, herbal character
- Blends well with frankincense, galbanum, angelica root, rose, lavender, cedarwood, bergamot, vetiver, oakmoss, and citrus oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbaceous, green, chypre, fougère, and earthy compositions
- An excellent fixative in blending – the root oil in particular helps to anchor and extend lighter, more volatile oils
- An unusual and underappreciated oil that adds a distinctive quality not easily replicated with other materials
