Lemon Verbena Essential Oil (Aloysia citrodora / syn. Aloysia triphylla)
Origin: Native to South America, particularly Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay. Now widely cultivated across southern Europe (particularly France and Spain), North Africa, and other Mediterranean and subtropical regions. France is the most notable producer for essential oil. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of the lemon verbena plant, which belongs to the Verbenaceae (verbena) family. Aloysia citrodora has undergone several reclassifications and may also be found listed as Aloysia triphylla, Lippia citriodora, or Verbena triphylla – all refer to the same plant. It should not be confused with common vervain (Verbena officinalis), which is a different species in a different genus with a very different scent profile. Lemon verbena was introduced to Europe from South America in the late 18th century and quickly became one of the most beloved aromatic plants in European gardens and perfumery. Genuine lemon verbena essential oil is rare and expensive due to the extremely low yield from distillation. It has a deeply established and prized place in fine French perfumery.
Scent: Bright, fresh, and exquisitely citrusy with a sweet, green, delicately floral character. Radiant and luminous – there's a distinctive, clean, lemon-like freshness balanced by a subtle, soft, herbaceous warmth. Faintly fruity and honeyed with a delicate, slightly rosy, almost tea-like depth. More refined, more complex, and more sweetly floral than lemongrass or lemon essential oil, with a softer, more sophisticated quality. Elegant, sparkling, and beautifully nuanced – often described as one of the finest and most exquisite lemon-scented materials in perfumery. A true lemon verbena oil has a luminous, almost ethereal clarity unmatched by any other citrus or citrus-like material.
Uses:
- Highly valued in natural perfumery as a bright, refined, citrusy accent – adds an exquisite, luminous, lemon-like freshness and delicate, green elegance to blends
- A beautiful addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, bright, radiant atmosphere to any space
