Frankincense Essential Oil - Indian (Boswellia serrata)

Origin: Native to India, particularly the dry, hilly regions of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and parts of central and western India. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried resin (oleogum resin) of the Indian frankincense tree, which belongs to the Burseraceae (frankincense/myrrh) family. The resin is harvested by making careful incisions in the bark, from which the sap exudes and hardens into pale, translucent resin tears. Boswellia serrata is also known as Indian olibanum or salai guggul and is one of several frankincense species – distinct from Somalian (B. carterii), Omani (B. sacra), Coptic (B. frereana), and Ethiopian (B. papyrifera) frankincense. Indian frankincense has been deeply revered in Ayurvedic and Hindu cultural traditions for thousands of years and holds an established place in aromatic and perfumery traditions.

Scent: Warm, soft, and gently resinous with a sweet, balsamic, slightly earthy character. Smoother and milder than Somalian frankincense – there's a subtle, woody, honey-like warmth balanced by a delicate, fresh, faintly citrusy brightness. Subtly green and herbaceous with a soft, powdery, almost floral depth. Less sharp and turpentine-like than B. carterii, with a quieter, more mellow, contemplative quality. Gentle, grounding, and long-lasting – a softer, sweeter, more understated frankincense with a warm, meditative character.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a soft, warm, resinous accent – adds a gentle, balsamic depth and quiet elegance to blends
  • A beautiful addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, serene, contemplative atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its soft, warm, resinous character
  • Blends beautifully with myrrh, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, lavender, rose, bergamot, orange, patchouli, and ylang ylang oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for resinous, woody, oriental, incense, and meditative compositions
  • Historically associated with sacred and spiritual traditions in India, valued for its gentle, revered aroma
  • A softer, more mellow alternative to Somalian frankincense for those seeking a quieter, sweeter resinous quality
