Rhododendron Essential Oil (Rhododendron anthopogon)
Also known as Himalayan Dwarf Rhododendron.
Origin: Native to the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, primarily found across Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and parts of northern India, typically growing at elevations between 3,000 and 5,000 metres. Nepal is the most notable producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the anthopogon shrub, which belongs to the Ericaceae (heather) family. Also known as sunpati in Nepali, Rhododendron anthopogon is an aromatic, evergreen alpine shrub that thrives in harsh, high-altitude conditions. It is distinct from other rhododendron species and should not be confused with the many ornamental varieties grown in gardens. The plant has been valued in Himalayan aromatic and cultural traditions for centuries, traditionally used as incense and in ceremonial contexts across Nepal and Tibet. It is a relatively recent addition to the international essential oil market and has gained increasing recognition among artisan perfumers for its unique, complex, high-altitude character.
Scent: Fresh, sweet, and softly herbaceous with a complex, green, slightly camphoraceous character. Delicate and multifaceted – there's a distinctive, bright, eucalyptus-like freshness balanced by a subtle, warm, rosy, almost geranium-like sweetness. Faintly spicy and earthy with a gentle, woody, balsamic depth. Subtly fruity and tea-like with a delicate, dry, hay-like undertone. Elegant, refined, and beautifully layered – a unique, sophisticated alpine scent that captures the essence of the high Himalayan landscape. Unlike any other essential oil, bridging the worlds of fresh, floral, and herbaceous with remarkable complexity.
