Gobo Root CO₂ Extract — A Dry, Earthy Whisper for the Natural Perfumer
Greater burdock — Arctium lappa — is a tall biennial herb of European and Asian roadsides and woodland edges, its long taproot eaten as a vegetable in Japan, where it is known as gobo. This supercritical CO₂ extract of the root captures that quiet, rooty character in concentrated form — a genuine curiosity for perfumers who enjoy working with unusual earthy materials rather than the familiar roots such as vetiver and orris.
It is a gentle material by nature, so we supply it at a generous 50% in natural TEC (triethyl citrate) — an odourless carrier that makes it easy to measure and dose while keeping its dry, earthy character clearly present.
Scent Profile
Mild, herbaceous and earthy, with a dry, slightly bitter edge. There is nothing sweet or showy here — it reads as freshly dug root, dry soil and green stems, a subtle and honest botanical character.
Perfumery Applications
A middle note with mild intensity, well suited to perfume oils and solid fragrances, as well as atmospheric and incense-inspired compositions. It works best as a supporting material that adds dry, rooty realism and a natural bitter edge to green, earthy, woody and chypre-style structures, blending quietly rather than leading. Introduce it gradually when building a composition.
Blending Suggestions
Pairs well with amber, bergamot and other citrus oils, black pepper, cardamom, Atlas cedarwood and clary sage, as well as vetiver, oakmoss, orris, patchouli, angelica root, lavender, galbanum and tobacco.
