Greater Galangal Essential Oil (Alpinia galanga)

Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, and southern China. Indonesia and India are among the largest producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried rhizomes (roots) of the greater galangal plant, which belongs to the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family. Greater galangal is the largest of the galangal species and should not be confused with lesser galangal (Alpinia officinarum) or sand ginger (Kaempferia galanga), which are related but botanically distinct species producing different oils. Greater galangal has been valued across Southeast Asian cultures for centuries and has an established place in aromatic traditions and perfumery.

Scent: Warm, sharp, and boldly spicy with a fresh, camphoraceous, slightly pungent character. More assertive and bracing than sand ginger – there's a distinctive, bright, eucalyptus-like freshness balanced by a deep, woody, peppery warmth. Subtly sweet and resinous with a faint, earthy, ginger-like depth. Full-bodied, vibrant, and complex – a robust, aromatic spice scent that is sharper, more penetrating, and more camphoraceous than true ginger, with a distinctive, bold, Southeast Asian character.
