Davana Essential Oil (Artemisia pallens)

Origin: Native to southern India, primarily cultivated in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. India is the sole significant producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops and aerial parts of the davana plant, which belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family. Davana is an aromatic annual herb that is traditionally harvested when in full bloom, typically between February and April. It has deep cultural and spiritual significance in Hindu tradition, where the flowers are offered to the deity Shiva in temple ceremonies. Davana is notable for a unique characteristic – its scent subtly changes and adapts when applied to skin, interacting with each individual's body chemistry to produce a slightly different fragrance on different people. It has been valued in Indian aromatic and perfumery traditions for centuries and has gained increasing recognition in international perfumery.

Scent: Rich, warm, and sweetly fruity with a complex, balsamic, slightly herbaceous character. Lush and exotic – there's a distinctive, deep, dried-fruit sweetness reminiscent of plum, fig, and ripe berries, balanced by a subtle, warm, woody, almost wine-like depth. Faintly spicy and earthy with a delicate, green, tea-like undertone. Dense, complex, and remarkably long-lasting – a unique, multilayered scent of extraordinary richness and warmth. One of the most distinctive and unusual essential oils available, prized for its ability to interact uniquely with individual skin chemistry.

Uses:

  • Highly valued in natural perfumery as a rich, fruity, balsamic accent – adds extraordinary depth, warmth, and a distinctive, dried-fruit sweetness to blends
  • A beautiful addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, rich, exotic atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, complex, fruity character
  • Blends beautifully with sandalwood, frankincense, rose, jasmine, cedarwood, vetiver, bergamot, ylang ylang, vanilla, and neroli oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for oriental, fruity, floral, exotic, and luxury compositions
  • Historically associated with Hindu temple traditions, valued for its revered, sacred aroma
  • An excellent fixative in blending – its rich, balsamic quality helps to anchor and extend the longevity of lighter, more volatile oils
