Citronella Essential Oil (Cymbopogon winterianus)
Origin: Native to tropical regions of Asia, particularly Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The oil is steam-distilled from the fresh or partially dried grass of the citronella plant, which belongs to the Poaceae (grass) family. There are two main varieties - Ceylon citronella (C. nardus) from Sri Lanka, and Java citronella (C. winterianus) from Indonesia, with the Java type generally considered to have a higher quality and more refined scent profile. Citronella has been widely used in perfumery and aromatic traditions for centuries.
Scent: Fresh, sharp, and lemony with a distinctly grassy, herbaceous character. Bright and slightly sweet but with an earthy, woody depth. Strong, penetrating, and immediately recognizable. The Java variety tends to be smoother and more citrus-forward, while the Ceylon type is more robust and grassy.
