Celery Seed Essential Oil (Apium graveolens)
Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region and western Asia, now widely cultivated across India, France, the Netherlands, Hungary, and China. India and France are among the most notable producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried, ripe seeds (fruit) of the celery plant, which belongs to the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family. Celery seed oil is a lesser-known but highly regarded oil in perfumery circles, valued for its unusual, complex scent profile that adds a distinctive quality not easily achieved with other oils.
Scent: Warm, earthy, and distinctly herbaceous with a sweet, spicy, slightly musky character. Rich and complex - there's a distinctive, warm, green, celery-like quality layered with a soft, woody, almost smoky depth. Subtly peppery with a faint, dry, balsamic undertone and a gentle, honeyed sweetness. Unusual, refined, and long-lasting — a unique, grounding scent that is far more complex and interesting than the humble plant might suggest.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, earthy, green accent- adds an unusual, herbaceous depth and musky complexity to blends
- A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, grounding atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its unique, earthy, aromatic character
- Blends well with lavender, cedarwood, vetiver, bergamot, frankincense, geranium, grapefruit, and sandalwood oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for earthy, green, woody, and chypre compositions
- An underappreciated oil that rewards skilled blending - adds a distinctive, hard-to-place depth and warmth
