Bay St. Thomas Essential Oil (Pimenta racemosa)

Origin: Native to the Caribbean and Central America, primarily found across the West Indies, particularly the Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, from which it takes its common name), Dominica, Barbados, Jamaica, and other Caribbean islands. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of the West Indian bay tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. Pimenta racemosa is also known as West Indian bay, bay rum tree, or simply bay. It should not be confused with bay laurel (Laurus nobilis), which is a completely different, unrelated species in a different botanical family producing a very different oil. It should also not be confused with allspice (Pimenta dioica), which is a closely related species in the same genus but produces a distinctly different oil. Bay St. Thomas oil has been deeply valued in Caribbean aromatic and cultural traditions for centuries, most notably as the key ingredient in the classic bay rum fragrance – one of the oldest and most iconic masculine grooming scents in the world, originating in the Virgin Islands.

Scent: Warm, rich, and boldly spicy with a sweet, aromatic, clove-like character. Full-bodied and immediately commanding – there's a distinctive, sharp, eugenol-rich warmth balanced by a subtle, fresh, slightly camphoraceous brightness. Faintly peppery and anise-like with a soft, sweet, balsamic, almost cinnamon-like depth. Subtly woody and earthy with a gentle, warm, resinous undertone. Dense, complex, and long-lasting – a powerful, aromatic, deeply spicy scent with a distinctive, warm, Caribbean character. One of the most iconic and recognisable spicy-aromatic oils in perfumery, inextricably linked with the classic bay rum tradition.

Uses:

  • Valued in natural perfumery as a warm, spicy, aromatic accent – adds a bold, clove-like warmth and distinctive, Caribbean depth to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, spicy, inviting atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, warm, aromatic character
  • The classic key ingredient in traditional bay rum formulations – one of the oldest and most iconic masculine grooming fragrances in perfumery history
  • Blends beautifully with lime, bergamot, orange, cinnamon, clove, allspice, cedarwood, sandalwood, vanilla, and frankincense oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for spicy, masculine, bay rum, colonial, barbershop, and Caribbean-inspired compositions
  • A bold blending oil that adds immediate warmth, spice, and character to any composition
