Anethi / Indian Dill Seed Essential Oil (Anethum sowa)

Origin: Native to South and Southeast Asia, primarily cultivated across India, Japan, and parts of Southeast Asia. India is the largest producer. The oil is steam-distilled from the dried, ripe seeds (fruit) of the Indian dill plant, which belongs to the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family. Anethum sowa is commonly known as Indian dill or East Indian dill and is distinct from European dill (Anethum graveolens), with a different chemical profile and scent character. Indian dill oil tends to be higher in dill apiole, while European dill seed oil is higher in carvone, resulting in noticeably different aromatic properties. Indian dill has been valued in Asian aromatic traditions for centuries and has an established place in perfumery and natural product making.

Scent: Warm, herbaceous, and distinctly spicy with a sharp, fresh, slightly bitter character. Bolder and more pungent than European dill – there's a distinctive, heavy, parsley-like, apiole-rich warmth balanced by a subtle, sweet, anise-like brightness. Faintly earthy and woody with a dry, green, camphoraceous undertone. Denser and more robust than its European counterpart, with a deeper, more resinous quality. Full-bodied, aromatic, and long-lasting – a stronger, more assertive dill scent with a distinctive Asian character.

Uses:

  • Used in natural perfumery as a warm, herbaceous, spicy accent – adds a bold, aromatic warmth and an unusual, pungent depth to blends
  • A distinctive addition to diffuser blends, bringing a warm, herbaceous, spicy atmosphere to any space
  • Used in candle making and soap crafting for its bold, warm, aromatic character
  • Blends well with coriander, caraway, bergamot, lemon, orange, cedarwood, frankincense, ginger, and cardamom oils
  • Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbal, spicy, oriental, and aromatic compositions
  • A bolder, more robust alternative to European dill seed oil for those seeking a stronger, more assertive herbal quality
