Hyssop Essential Oil (Hyssopus officinalis var. decumbens)
Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, primarily found in southern France and parts of Spain. The oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of the decumbent (low-growing) variety of hyssop, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Unlike standard hyssop, this variety is characterised by its high linalool content, giving it a distinctly softer, more floral scent profile. It is a less commonly available oil, prized by perfumers and artisan blenders for its gentler, more refined character.
Scent: Soft, sweet, and herbaceous with a gentle, floral warmth. Lighter and more delicate than standard hyssop - there's a smooth, lavender-like quality balanced by a fresh, green, minty brightness. Subtly honeyed with a faint, clean, woody undertone. Refined, elegant, and beautifully approachable - a softer, more rounded herbal scent without the sharp, camphoraceous edge of its parent species.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a soft, floral-herbaceous accent - adds a gentle, refined quality to blends
- A lovely addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, gentle atmosphere to any space
- Used in candle making and soap crafting for its delicate, approachable herbal character
- Blends beautifully with lavender, clary sage, geranium, bergamot, rosemary, myrtle, frankincense, and cedarwood oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for herbal, floral, and green compositions
- A gentler alternative to standard hyssop oil for those who prefer a softer, more floral scent profile
