Citral Essential Oil (Cymbopogon citratus ct. citral)
Origin: Native to tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia, particularly India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, now widely cultivated across Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. The oil is steam-distilled from the fresh or partially dried leaves of the lemongrass plant, which belongs to the Poaceae (grass) family. This is the West Indian variety of lemongrass, distinguished by its high citral content, which gives it its characteristically bright, lemony aroma. Citral has been used in aromatic traditions for centuries and is a staple ingredient in perfumery and natural product making.
Scent: Bright, fresh, and intensely lemony with a strong, herbaceous, grassy character. Bold and zesty - sharper and more pungent than lemon oil, with a distinctive earthy, green depth. There's a subtle, sweet undertone balanced by a slightly bitter, tea-like dryness. Clean, vibrant, and immediately recognizable - a powerful, uplifting citrus-green scent.
Uses:
- Valued in natural perfumery as a bright, citrus-green accent - adds freshness and energy to blends
- A popular addition to diffuser blends, bringing a fresh, vibrant atmosphere to any space
- Widely used in candle making and soap crafting for its strong, clean, lemony character
- Used in natural household products for its fresh, bright scent profile
- Blends well with geranium, lavender, eucalyptus, cedarwood, bergamot, peppermint, ginger, and rosemary oils
- Popular in artisan fragrance work for fresh, green, and citrus compositions
