Shamama Attar meaning ‘sweet breeze’ in Arabic is a beautiful and incredibly complex herbal natural perfume known for its rare, spicy and rich aroma. It is produced through the hydro- distillation of a variety of herbs, natural essential oils, spices, woods, roots and seeds. It is a rare and precious natural perfume and is similar to vintage wines in that each batch varies from the last. Indeed every perfumer has their own formula of making this beautiful traditional attar and it is usually a well kept secret.

Shamama Attar is primarily used as winter perfume in India and most of the Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Jordan and more. Besides this it can also be used in perfumery as an ingredient.

THE BACKGROUND OF NATURAL ATTARS

The word Attar is derived from the Hindu/Urdu word Ittar which in turn derives from the similar Persian word for Perfume, Itar, and is an essential oil derived from botanical sources usually blended with a wood oil like, but not always, Sandalwood.

The practice of extracting scent from flowers herbs and spices began in India and has been used there for at least 5,000 years by skilled artisans to produce exquisite fragrances with some attars actually improving with age like a good wine. The ageing period can last from one to ten years depending on the botanical used and the results desired. Most commonly these oils are extracted via hydro or steam distillation and generally natural perfumes which qualify as Attars are distilled with water rather than by chemical means and they are also alcohol free. Attars are a luxury and in ancient times were used in offerings to the gods.

For thousands of years, ittars were considered in some societies to be something that attracted angels and warded off evil spirits. Saints and spiritual aspirants would adorn themselves with these scents to assist them in their journey towards enlightenment.
